Looking for a great volunteer opportunity to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr on his Day of Service? Join Blue Planet Scuba for a independent clean up of Rock Creek and #OptOutside! Get to know one of our favorite local greenspaces while giving back to our community by keeping our waterways clean.
Due to COVID-19, we are setting this up as a Rock Creek Conservancy Cleanup Campaign. This means that anytime between January 16th and the 18th, you will head over to a section of Rock Creek and undertake your own clean up. Once you have completed your clean up, we'll need you to report back to us how much trash and recycling you collected.
This year, National Park Services has asked us to focus on a new area for us, between Picnic Areas 6 and 10 along Beach Drive. You can access this section of Beach Drive from Military Road only (access from the North is closed). Please plan to focus on any of these picnic areas or anywhere along the banks of Rock Creek.
Please plan to bring your own gloves and trash bags and any other supplies you might need. NPS is very short staffed, so they ask that we carry out any trash or recycling we collect instead of leaving it for them to dispose of.
Anyone joining this campaign will need to complete the RCC online waiver linked to below. You will also need to complete a waiver for National Park Services which they email you once you register.
WHEN: Saturday, January 16 through Monday, January 18.
WHERE: Rock Creek Park between Picnic areas 6 and 10 (see map).
WHAT TO BRING: Wear comfortable, warm clothes and shoes (you may get wet). Bring yard gloves and trash bags to collect any trash or recycling.
You MUST RSVP via Rock Creek Conservancy's website below! Registration ends 5pm on Friday! We will send out an email to all volunteers who have signed up on Friday the 15th with more details.
